Blessed be the fruit

Confession: I first saw the tv series before reading the book. The Handmaid’s tale had been on my to-read list for quite a while, but it wasn’t until The Testaments came out that I really felt that I needed to read it now. I bought beautiful hardcover versions of both books. Did I enjoy the book as much as the tv series? Read it below!

The story

What used to be the United States has largely turned into Gilead. A society that lives strictly by certain interpretations of the bible. The laws are extremely strict. Offenders are likely to be punished by torture and/or death. For example, women are not allowed to read or write anymore, you must be married to have a relationship, homosexuality is not allowed, self-determination is not allowed and the list goes on.

Because the birth rate had plummeted, the people in higher society are entitled to a handmaid if they cannot have babies of their own. That means that fertile women are ‘given’ to families. They are forced to get pregnant by the man of the house.

The story revolves around one of these handmaids, you don’t learn her real name in the book but she is called Offred (because she belongs to Fred). We follow her life in Gilead.

My opinion

It is such a well-written, well though out scary, dystopian story that actually could happen. The different characters and roles are so interesting! Like the Aunts, (the only women allowed to read), the handmaid’s, the commanders, the eyes etcetera.
Although this is almost never the case, this time the tv series is actually better than the book in my opinion. Mostly because Offred is more feisty in the tv series and more docile in the book. I prefer her more rebellious nature in the tv series. However, this book is definitely a must-read. The world Atwood creates is very believable, which makes it powerful and scary.

Conclusion of The Handmaid’s Tale

This is a really good book. If you want to see the tv series as well, I recommend you to first read the book because I think that’s an easier switch to the slight changes in the series. If you already seen the series, you don’t really have to read The Handmaid’s Tale in order to read The Testaments. However, I do recommend you will because reading is fun. 🙂

Verdict

Scandinavian writers somehow know how to write a good book. At least, this is my experience, but I probably just read a small fraction of Scandinavian authors. Of course, they must be good in order for them to be translated into English or Dutch. Anyhow, I was very eager to read this one because I read so many positive reviews! Was it as good? Let’s find out!

My first impression

My first chuckle was while reading the first page. Okay, this must be good! My first emotion was not long after. Wow, this book seems to be funny and emotional at the same time. A heartfelt read!

The story

Ove is a man set in his ways. He loves his routine and likes to complain about the world around him. However, soon you find out that there is more to him. He loves and misses his late wife. She was “the color” in his life. This love is endearing and feels very pure. He doesn’t really want to go on without her.

Ove didn’t have the easiest life, working from a young age and being betrayed multiple times. He handles it quite well by moving on, but the reader is left with feelings.

The main character Ove is withdrawn, until new neighbors move in. He learns he actually does not dislike the woman (Parvaneh) and the kids are okay too. The man remains a doofus in his eyes. Parvaneh challenges him to come out of the house, help others and live life. The friendship that unfolds is heartwarming.

The story is about life, love, loneliness, friendship, human connections and challenges.

My opinion

I simply love this book. I think it’s special that a book can make you laugh and nearly cry. The book touches your heart to the core!

The character Ove is developed well and throughout the story you grow more fond of him with every page you turn. Ove is the person you’d like have as your neighbor or grandfather. It is also endearing that Parvaneh encourages him to live, even if it irritates Ove in the beginning. Everyone needs a Parvaneh now and then.

Conclusion of A man called Ove

This book is amazing. It is hilarious, heartfelt and it makes you feel all the feelings. Moreover, the characters and the story are developed well and the writing is great. I would highly recommend this book! I am sure I will read it many more times. The story somehow really stays with you for a while. Perhaps because the book is deeply human.

Verdict

Nee heb je is het nieuwste boek van Charlotte de Monchy. Ik ben enorm fan van de boeken van Charlotte de Monchy. Waarom? Ik wordt altijd enorm vrolijk en vergeet de wereld om me heen tijdens het lezen haar boeken. Je kunt begrijpen dat ik dan ook helemaal in mijn nopjes was toen ik dit boek van mijn lieve vriendin Laura cadeau kreeg. Een paar dagen later ben ik er direct in begonnen. Lees in deze recensie of dit boek mij weer net zo blij maakt.

“Als Bobbie bij de bedrijfscoach zit en er alleen maar testbeeld op haar netvlies verschijnt, beseft ze dat ze misschien toch wel een beetje overwerkt is. Gelukkig heeft haar baas een klusje voor haar op Bali, het eiland waar haar zus Lauren woont, met wie ze al negen jaar gebrouilleerd is. Ze hoeft alleen de uitkoop van een surfschool te regelen, zodat het bedrijf daar een luxe resort kan bouwen. Daarna heeft ze tijd zat om de ruzie met Lauren bij te leggen en zichzelf op te laden op een wit bountystrand. Op Bali pakt het allemaal heel anders uit dan verwacht. De eigenaar van de surfschool, ene Samuel, zegt doodleuk niets voor de verkoop te voelen. En haar zus staat ook niet echt te springen als Bobbie onverwachts met een enorme koffer op de veranda van haar restaurant staat. Bobbie is er toch van overtuigd dat ze beiden zal kunnen ompraten en ze boekt om te beginnen een paar surflessen bij Samuel. Maar de relaxte levenshouding, het heerlijke klimaat en de charmes van haar surfleraar missen hun uitwerking niet. Is het misschien zijzelf die het roer radicaal moet omgooien?”

Mijn eerste indruk van Nee heb je

Aahhh, zo heerlijk! Ik ben vanaf de eerste bladzijde al verliefd op het boek. Een mega fijn hoofdpersoon waarin ik mijzelf kan herkennen, een vlotte schrijfstijl en een verhaal dat zich afspeelt op het prachtige Bali. Waar ik in 2009 ben geweest. Het roept mooie herinneringen op. Wat wil ik nog meer. Ik kon echt niet stoppen met lezen.

Waar het boek over gaat

In Nee heb je volgen we de twee zussen Lauren en Bobbie. Jaren terug kregen zij ruzie op de begrafenis van hun buurmeisje. Daarna hebben ze elkaar negen jaar niet meer gesproken. Bobbie, een echte workaholic, is overwerkt en moet verplicht drie maanden vrij nemen van de bedrijfsarts. Daar zit ze echt absoluut niet op te wachten. Workaholic als ze is, heeft ze geen idee wat ze in die tijd moet doen. Ze besluit uiteindelijk naar haar zus op Bali te gaan.

Lauren daarentegen is in die negen jaar naar Bali verhuisd voor de liefde. Haar relatie is inmiddels stuk gelopen, maar ze woont samen met haar zoontje, is gelukkig, en runt een restaurant dat goed loopt. Door haar mislukte relatie is Lauren bang dat ze nooit meer een man gaat vinden. Als haar zus Bobbie opeens voor de deur staat, heeft ze geen idee wat ze er mee moet. Wat nu?

Wat ik ervan vond

Weer weet Charlotte De Monchy mij gelukkig te maken met haar boek. Van begin tot einde is het gewoon ultiem genieten van haar personages, de sfeer in haar boek en de humor die ze erin verwerkt heeft. Hoe doet ze dat toch? Met nog geen een van haar boeken heeft Charlotte De Monchy mij teleurgesteld. Als ik haar boeken koop, weet ik gewoon dat ik gegarandeerd geniet van het hele boek en soms zelfs hardop zit te lachen!

Conclusie van Nee heb je

Nee heb je zorgt voor ontspannen, heerlijke uren leesplezier. Na een donkere winter, verlangen we allemaal naar meer zon, zee en strand. Het was een goede zet van de Monchy om een zonnige bestemming te kiezen voor haar roman. Vanaf de kun je genieten van een flinke portie zon en waan je jezelf op dit prachtige Indonesisch eiland. In je verbeelding rijd je net zoals Bobbie met je scooter door de straten van Bali, ga je surfen met een knappe surfleraar op de azuurblauwe zee en droom je weg op de sneeuwwitte zandstranden onder een rieten strandparasol. Wat heeft een mens nog meer nodig?

Ik kijk al uit naar de volgende roman van Charlotte de Monchy.
