I hadn’t read Young Adult in years, but because of the overwhelmingly positive reviews I decided to read “Percy Jackson and the lightning thief” by Rick Riordan. Besides, I do like Greek myths, so I was definitely curious.

My opinion

The book is fun to read. It is not as brilliant as the Harry Potter series, so I don’t understand why people compare the two series so much. I do feel that some parts are dragged out a bit too much, the book could’ve been shorter. Also, I did not feel a real connection to the characters. However, the story is entertaining. I can imagine a younger reader would enjoy the book even more. I may actually read the other parts as well, but not necessarily right away.

A fun read, suitable for its targeted audience: young adults. I love the Greek myths entwined. If you like fantasy, Greek myths and an easy read, this is the book for you!

I would give it 3,5 cups of coffee, but I will round it up:

Years ago, I watched the movie “Practical Magic” and I absolutely loved it. It was a pleasing discovery that Alice Hoffman wrote a prequel in 2017. Was The Rules of Magic just as compelling? Find out below!

Therefore, Susanna needed to set some rules of magic: no walking in the moonlight, no red shoes, no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles and certainly, absolutely, no books about magic…

First Impression

The Rules of Magic started off a bit childish, therefore I wasn’t quite sure if this was going to be good. Moreover, the characters seem to be a bit complicated in an unnecessary way. However, the years pass away fast in this book and many life-changing events occur. The childishness fades.

The Story

The book revolves around three siblings: Franny, Jet, and Vincent. If you’ve seen or read “Practical Magic”, you know that Franny and Jet are the aunts of Gillian and Sally. The story starts off in the 50’s when they are teenagers and they are discovering life and themselves. The book ends when they are much older and Gillian and Sally knock on their door.

When Franny turns 17, they receive an invitation to stay at aunt Isabelle’s for the summer. I think the story really kicks off during their summer there, because this is where they discover their descendancy, magic and their curse. This curse entails that the man they are in love with, will die soon if they are in a relationship with them. They all try to outsmart this cruel curse, but will one of them succeed? That is for you to read.

The characters are not very likable, although you do want to continue reading because you want them to be okay. They are not unlikeable though, it’s just that they are convinced that they are this or that, or they should be this or that, and sometimes that just seems unnecessary and perhaps a bit annoying.

As the story develops, many sad situations happen and the book definitely becomes more mature. Actually, it is such a rollercoaster that I have many mixed feelings about the book. I feel like it is more about what the characters experience and have to go through because of their magic than it is about magic.

My Opinion

I loved reading The Rules of Magic, although I didn’t think it was a particularly good book. Confusing, huh? I liked reading it, but I don’t think all the characters develop sufficiently, because underlying it stays a bit bleak. Or maybe the storylines skip too many years at once, so it feels a bit off beat. Overall, I think Vincent’s storyline is most successfully written.

Also, I would have loved to read a bit more about the magic, or their rules for that matter. I did learn something from the book though, “Abracadabra” is Aramaic for “I create what I speak” and I think that’s beautiful.

I am leaning towards 3,5 stars, but that is not an option, so I am giving the benefit of the doubt: 4 stars.

Ik ben enorm fan van de boeken van Ransom Riggs. Na de drie boeken van de peculiar-serie te hebben gelezen werd het hoog tijd om aan Bijzondere vertelsels te beginnen. Dit boek is een collectie van korte verhalen uit de wereld van mevrouw Peregrine met prachtige illustraties van Andrew Davidson. Lees in deze recensie of ik de korte verhalen net zo geweldig vind als de serie zelf.

Mijn eerste indruk

Kijk die cover! Prachtig toch. Natuurlijk mag je een boek nooit kiezen aan de hand van de cover, maar dit kan toch niet anders zijn dan liefde op het eerste gezicht?! Het is duidelijk dat Andrew Davidson tot de top behoort met zijn illustraties. Na het zien van deze cover liggen mijn verwachtingen hoog. Gelukkig is het voorwoord al gelijk heel fantasierijk en tovert het na de eerste drie zinnen en lach op mijn gezicht. Dit moet geweldig worden!

Het verhaal

Je zult de vertrouwde personages in deze collectie bijna niet terugvinden, wat we lezen in dit boek is de strijd van de hoofdpersonages hun voorouders om met hun talenten om te gaan en zich sterk te houden tegen de wrede manieren die de maatschappij gebruikte om hen te verbannen. Tijdens deze reis terug in de tijd is Miljard, de enige personage die dus wel terug komt in het boek, een geweldige gids! Ieder verhaal staat op zichzelf. Je hoeft dus niet uren aan een stuk door te lezen. Gewoon even een verhaaltje tussendoor.

Wat ik ervan vond

Wat heerlijk! Het ene verhaal is nog vreemder dan het andere. Bijzondere vertelsels is net zo interessant en speciaal als de trilogie van mevrouw Peregrine. Of eigenlijk…. Is het misschien zelfs beter.

Het is niet nodig om de trilogie van mevrouw Peregrine te hebben gelezen om te genieten van deze verzameling. Ik vond de verhalen interessant genoeg om je helemaal in de fantasiewereld mee te nemen. Toch zullen degenen die al bekend zijn met de wereld van de bijzondere kinderen dit boek denk ik nog meer waarderen. Ik kan gerust zeggen dat dit magnifieke universum een oneindige bron van geweldige verhalen is en dat bomvol staat met prachtige illustraties thema’s.

De conclusie van Bijzondere vertelsels

Het boek ziet er prachtig uit, is fijn geschreven en de verhalen vormen heerlijk leesvoer. Daarnaast zorgen de korte verhalen ervoor dat je nieuwe ontdekkingen doet over de wereld van de mevrouw Peregrine en de bijzondere kinderen. Naar mijn mening heeft Ransom Riggs opnieuw een kunstwerk neergezet!

Nieuw boek!

Wist je al dat het vierde deel A map of days op 2 oktober 2018 uitkomt? Ik kan niet wachten! Ik lees de serie zelf in het Engels, maar mocht je wachten op het vierde deel in het Nederlands Dan kan ik je alvast vertellen dat het boek De kaart der dagen heten en wordt gepubliceerd op 22 november 2018. Gelukkig dus maar 1,5 maand later. Dat scheelt!
